I first discovered coconut oil and all it's fun properties back in 2007 during my pregnancy. The first stuff I bought was a non-label brand from a local herb shop. It felt grainy sometimes, and the solid to liquid thing happened almost instantly with temperature change. Then I bought some stuff from greenwise Publix a year ago. It was okay. It was expensive and it fell out of my pantry and all over the floor. I cried.
Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil is really amazing! At first I found it to be rather greasy on my skin, but I ignored it and my skin soaked it up in a few minutes. My main use for coconut oil in the past is as a moisturizer on my skin. My skin is soft right now. You are all so jealous.
I use coconut oil for sugar scrubs, too. Once I didn't have any and I used olive oil and it worked fine, but it smelled gross. Coconut oil for sugar scrubs, all the way. Also, it is a necessary ingredient for my home made deodorant.
I decided I wanted to branch out and try other things, so I did a search and fell in love with this list by Crunchy Betty. She has a recipe for deodorant at the top ('cause it's really cool to make your own, guys) and then it discusses other cool uses for coconut oil. I made some toothpaste using her recipe. I didn't like it too much, but when we're all done with our 4 half-used tubes of Crest I'll be secretly switching everyone to home made toothpaste because it's convenient and we'll live.
Here are our recent coconut oil adventures!
We made the most delicious brownies ever. We made lotion soap. We made sugar scrubs. We also used it to brown our roast, cook rice (coconut rice is amazing by the way), as a moisturizer, as sunscreen, on cuts, and as a massage oil. We used so much of this coconut oil I'm nearly ready to buy another big ol' jar!
Thanks Tropical Traditions! I'll be hosting a giveaway on June 10th for one free quart of Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil. Stay tuned!!!

Hey Shary,
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great post!
I've been using more natural home-made products for cleaning and personal hygiene etc. for a couple of years now and have been doing some weekly experiments with alternative hair-care regimes recently.
I've been using coconut oil for cooking for a year or so. Never thought of using it for toothpaste though so I'll be giving that a go soon!
Cheers again,
Rob
